To promote sustainable agriculture and enhance transparency, based on ESG concepts, it is important to establish an environment where technology and information on also precision and digital agriculture can be shared between Japan and Brazil beyond the existing organizational framework through many partnerships, such as public-private partnerships.

For this purpose, the “Collaborative Development Project for Precision and Digital Agriculture to Strengthen the Innovation Ecosystem and the Sustainability of Brazilian Agri-food Chains" (CoPADi) was formulated

The planning phase of the Project was carried out from May 2021 to March 2022 followed by a detailed planning study in May 2022. Based on that, an M/M (Minutes of Meeting) was signed between Japan and Brazil, agreeing on the contents of the implementation phase.

The Project is being implemented by the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC), Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA), Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) and Japan International Cooperation Agency.

1. Innovation Ecosystem

Definition

Cortina Verde

An agricultural innovation ecosystem is an organizational network arrangement of organizations related to agriculture (research institutions, universities, public institutions, private companies, start-ups, rural producers and associations, etc.).

This Project aims to develop a digital transformation strategy, an agricultural technology map, and a development roadmap for Japan and Brazil, and hold workshops with public and private stakeholders.

In the process, an innovation ecosystem will be formed developed and will also serve as a foundation for other outputs of this Project (Agricultural Data Platform, OFEs).

2. Digital Platform

Definition

Tecnologia de Dados

Agricultural data platforms are cloud services that provide various data and programs (such as weather, farmland, yield prediction, etc).

In Japan, a public agricultural data platform called WAGRI is in operation, where data from private companies as well as government offices and research institutes are provided through an API*. Through WAGRI, ICT vendors and agricultural machinery manufacturers develop and provide web services and applications for agricultural production by combining various data and programs.

On the other hand, although various private agricultural data platforms exist in Brazil, the environment is not ripe for combining and linking them together. Therefore, this Project will build a data platform based on Embrapa's APIs platform, AgroAPI, where public and private data and programs are provided through APIs with reference to Japan's WAGRI.

*API: An API (Application Programming Interface) is a set of definitions and protocols that allows different software or systems to communicate with each other. The API defines the ways and methods through which programs can request and exchange data or functionalities.In summary, APIs help integrate systems and expand their functionalities in a standardized and reusable way.

3. On-Farm Experimentation

The On-Farm Experimentation (OFE) will be carried out in three areas: Crop, Livestock, and Agroforestry, with the states of São Paulo, Paraná, and Pará being the candidate locations.

The purpose of OFE is to co-create more innovative technologies using the technologies of private companies and research institutes in Japan and Brazil in a real production environment, to verify whether they can contribute to solving the issues facing Brazilian agriculture. Also, the activity is planned to utilize the data and programs of the agricultural data platform developed in the Output 2, and to provide the data and programs developed through the OFE to the Output 2.

More details of the three areas are as follows:

Colheita

Crop

The Crop vertical seeks to generate auditable and quality digital data using agricultural machinery, enabling quick and transparent responses.

It also seeks to facilitate the integration of data from different platforms, and to improve Embrapa's AgroAPI platform.

Gado

Livestock

The Livestock vertical seeks to contribute to the traceability and biometric identification of beef cattle, increasing productivity, management efficiency and production transparency.

Floresta

The Agroforestry vertical seeks to organize digital data to prove sustainable practices and assist in the certification of products planted in the Amazon Rainforest.

Agroforestry

4. Transfer and Dissemination

At the end of the Project, it is expected to be transferred and disseminated all the knowledge generated and compiled through various materials, events, and training.

It is planned that in total:

  • Knowledge and success experience of this project based on Precision and Digital Agriculture: 200 Entrepreneurs, Researchers and Promoters;

  • Knowledge about APIs and functions of the Digital Platform for agriculture: 300 Students (IT major) and Engineers;

  • General knowledge about Precision and Digital Agriculture: 600 Students (Agriculture major) and Professionals in the field.
