On December 8, 2025, the project held its 3rd Sub-committee meeting* online. This project regularly convenes Sub-committee meetings with project stakeholders to deepen discussions in specialized fields and effectively advance activities. This meeting was attended by 33 participants from government/public agencies, industry associations, research institutions, and others, who engaged in active discussions regarding the project's progress and future plans.
1. Development Progress of the Project's Key “CoPADi API”
This Project is expanding the functionality of Embrapa's “AgroAPI” platform, used for research and academic purposes, to enable more open and widespread utilization. This expanded functionality has been named the “CoPADi API,” derived from the Project's name.
The key feature of the CoPADi API is lowering the hurdle for data utilization. With just a data-recording device or the data itself, even small-scale farmers can feed agricultural data — such as farm machinery operating locations, fertilizer application rates, and pesticide spraying data — into the API. It can also incorporate the diverse data already held by AgroAPI, including meteorological and soil data. By making this data available as open data, it is expected to promote the development of new applications and services by agricultural service providers. Furthermore, it is anticipated that small-scale farmers, who previously faced difficulties in utilizing data, will be able to achieve efficient and productive agriculture through data utilization.
Currently, development of the CoPADi API is nearing completion, and a pilot project is underway to integrate agricultural data from the state of Paraná. For this pilot, Japan's Agricultural Information Design Inc. and Brazil's Jacto are providing data recording and transmission devices. Furthermore, as part of this functional expansion, a platform is scheduled for completion that will automatically display data obtained from participating pilot farms on a map, in collaboration with the AgDataBox from the Federal Technological University of Paraná.
2. Towards Expanding the Use and Establishing a Sustainable Maintenance System
The value of the “CoPADi API” increases as more people use it. Therefore, we discussed two challenges: “how to increase the number of users” and “how to maintain and manage the system as the number of users grows.”
Usage Expansion Strategy: It was suggested that having major manufacturers adopt the API would be effective for building trust and increasing recognition.
Maintenance Structure: It would be difficult for Embrapa alone to handle the future increases in communication capacity, service infrastructure expansion, and associated cost burdens that come with growing users. To address this challenge, the Project is considering establishing a “consortium.”
The consortium would involve Stakeholders and users of the CoPADi API (such as agricultural machinery manufacturers). Participants would share the maintenance costs in exchange for benefiting from the API. Additionally, the consortium would serve as the governing body to decide policies for the API, including the usage expansion strategy. This is considered a crucial step for the sustainable and stable operation of the API.
3. Upcoming Key Events
We plan to hold an event around April 2026 to report on this Project's outcomes and explain how to use the CoPADi API. We will announce the dates, times, and venue once finalized. We encourage anyone interested in this project or utilizing the API to attend!
*Records of Project Stakeholder Meetings (Sub-committee Meetings):
Discussions were held across three fields—“Crops,” “Livestock,” and “Agroforestry”—with a total of three meetings scheduled between 2024 and 2025.
1st Meeting (June 2024): Current status and challenges of precision agriculture/digital agriculture, potential of OFE (On-Farm Experimentation)
2nd Meeting (July 2025): Concept, improvement points, and expected effects of the data-linked agriculture platform “AgroAPI”
3rd Meeting (December 2025): Toward building an innovation ecosystem to promote precision agriculture and digital agriculture
*What is AgDataBox:
An open-source platform for agricultural data management developed at the Federal Technological University of Paraná (UTFPR). It can be used to compare and analyze agricultural data and manage daily work records.
