The Project Team visited CAMTA in Tomé-Açu, Pará, to report the current progress of the Agroforestry OFE - May 2025

In this Project, OFEs will be implemented in the Agroforestry sector in addition to the Crop and Livestock sectors.

Agroforestry is a form of agriculture in which trees and crops are planted together on a single piece of land, and agriculture, forestry, and livestock production are carried out simultaneously through the interaction of plants and ecosystems. While it is expected to have various benefits such as diversification of production, climate change countermeasures, and sustainable land management, it is not as productive as large-scale, single cultivation.

The Japanese company Fruta Fruta* has been promoting environmentally-friendly products by displaying the “CO2 reduction amount” seal (Photo 3), resulted by agroforestry practices. The company plans to expand on this and, in the future, calculate and visualize these CO2 reductions (carbon absorption) on a data platform*, and establish a system that allows companies to utilize the data necessary for calculation, report, and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (including Scope 3*) throughout their supply chains.

The OFE will use data from the fields of CAMTA agricultural cooperative (Tomé-Açu, Pará), which distributes açai to Fruta Fruta. The CAMTA cooperative manages data such as tree species and number of trees on “Terras Gestor,” a data platform from Terras App Solutions (Belém, Pará).

By linking this with Fruta Fruta's data platform through an API*, the Project aims to calculate CO2 reductions (carbon absorption) from CAMTA's data, on Fruta Fruta's platform.

Therefore, the main activity in this OFE is to coordinate the API specifications to connect each data platform (in addition, we aim to further increase data irreversibility between the above platforms via Embrapa’s platform “AgroAPI” as well).

In May, the Project Team visited CAMTA cooperative, which has been providing the Project with data from their fields, to share the progress of the OFE.

Fruta Fruta and Terras will continue to adjust the API specifications, and the actual CO2 reductions (carbon absorption) will be calculated by COP30, which is scheduled to be held in November.

*Fruta Fruta Inc: A Japanese food company that imports ingredients, such as açai and cacao grown by agroforestry methods from the CAMTA agricultural cooperative, commercializes and sells these products in Japan.

*Data Platform: An infrastructure system for collecting, storing, analyzing, and sharing various types of data. Users can visualize and link data on the platform and use it for decision-making and business support.

*Scope 3: In calculating GHG emissions throughout a company's supply chain, this refers to a wider range of indirect emissions other than Scope 1 (direct emissions by the business itself) and Scope 2 (indirect emissions by the business).

*API (Application Programming Interface): An arrangement (interface) for software to exchange functions and data. It makes it easy to use and link functions and data from other services. For example, a map application uses the Google Maps API to obtain map information, a weather application uses the weather data API to obtain the latest weather information, etc.
